Pliskova is Czech hero in Fed Cup triumph over Russia

first_imgBy Michael KahnThe Czech Republic defended their Fed Cup title on Sunday as Karolina Pliskova became the home team’s hero with a starring performance in their thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Russia.Pliskova not only won her singles rubber to tie the match at 2-2 but then returned to the court after just a 30-minute break to help secure another comeback victory in the final set of the deciding doubles. It enabled the Czechs to celebrate their fourth Fed Cup triumph in five years in the event regarded as the World Cup of women’s tennis – and they succeeded despite Russian star Maria Sharapova winning both her singles matches over the weekend.Having started the day level at 1-1, the home side fell behind in the best-of-five series after Sharapova defeated their top player, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening match of the day.The 23-year-old Pliskova, playing in her first Fed Cup final, tied the score after cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with a service game and punishing forehand that overpowered the Russian.Pliskova was then forced to return to the court and partner Barbora Strycova in the decisive doubles after world No.4 Lucie Safarova was unable to play due to an injury.Though the pair lost the first set and looked in deep trouble, they rebounded to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russian pair, Elena Vesnina andPavlkyuchenkova.Pliskova, who reckoned she was not worried about fatigue after being thrust into the key doubles, said: “Even though we lost the first set, we believed we could win.“I played two matches. It was the last match of the season and I gave everything I had.”The Russians had also made a last-minute change in the doubles by electing to match Vesnina with Pavlyuchenkova rather than her Grand Slam-winning partner Ekaterina Makarova, who had not played since the US Open.It looked to be paying dividends as the visitors got off to a quick start, grabbing the first set against opponents who were playing doubles together for the first time.Yet Pliskova and Strycova quickly recovered, storming back to take the next two sets in front of a boisterous home crowd at the O2 arena as the Russians committed 28 unforced errors.Earlier, Kvitova, who had won her opening match on Saturday in the two-day final, started out strong but seemed to tire after the first set as Sharapova grew stronger.“I played well in the first set and middle of the second,” Kvitova said. “The turning point came at the end of the second set when she broke me and held the serve.”last_img read more

Stoke City sack Hughes after Cup exit

first_imgStoke City have sacked manager Mark Hughes after four and half years in charge, the Premier League club said on Saturday. The decision came within hours of a shock 2-1 defeat in the FA Cup third round by Coventry City, three leagues below them.“We would like to thank Mark for all he has achieved for the Club over the last four and a half years, notably in guiding us to three successive ninth-place finishes in the Premier League, and we wish him every success for the future,” Stoke said in a statement.“The Club will look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible and will be making no further comment at this time.”Keeping Stoke in the top half of the table for three successive campaigns was followed by a drop to 13th last season and an unsuccessful transfer window with new signings having made little impression. This season they have fallen into the Premier League relegation places and have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions, having won only five league matches out of 22.Hughes did not help himself by fielding a weakened team in a 5-0 defeat at Chelsea last weekend to save players for what he felt was a more winnable game at home to lowly Newcastle. They lost 1-0, dropping into the bottom three, before the FA Cup humiliation at Coventry in his 200th game at the club.“We’ve got good owners who will make the right decisions for the club,” Hughes said before learning that the previously supportive board had decided they needed a change.Stoke do not play again until travelling to Manchester United on Monday week in the Premier League but they will hope to appoint a successor quickly enough to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. The 54-year-old Hughes has a wealth of managerial experience at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Stoke as well as five years in charge of Wales – who currently have a vacancy after the departure of Chris Coleman to Sunderland.last_img read more

Happy campers end summer

first_imgWHITTIER – It may not be time for the Olympics again, unless you’re a summer camper at Amigo and Adventure County Parks in unincorporated Whittier. The two camps came together on Friday for an Olympic-themed finale to their summer activities. “Amigo Park is really small,” said Angel Baltazar, recreational supervisor for both parks. “It’s really too small for us to do a bigger event.” As the kids, who range in age between 6 and 12, cheered each other on during a relay contest on Adventure’s play equipment, they played and giggled while they waited in line. The kids engaged each other in a water balloon toss, a basketball game in which the kids lie on their stomachs rolling on mini-rollers, an obstacle course and a scavenger hunt, to name a few events. Over the course of the summer, the kids have gone to Knott’s Berry Farm, Medieval Times, Magic Mountain and Soak City. They’ve also been day camping at Camp Williams in the Angeles National Forrest. “I had a lot of fun,” said 11-year-old Vanessa Garcia, as she huffed and puffed after finishing the relay race. “We went on a lot of trips. There are a lot of new people that were nice this year.” The summer camp staff members and volunteers barbecued a lunch to send the kids off until next summer. According to Baltazar, many of them will be back for more. bethania.palma@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Emery is under pressure in the Gunners hotseat after a run of just two wins from their last ten Premier League games.Their recent form has been particularly alarming for frustrated fans, having thrown away leads to draw in four consecutive matches before losing 2-0 to Leicester last weekend. The board appear to be sticking with Emery for now, with reports claiming Arsenal could hold off making a change at the top until the end of the season. The likes of Jose Mourinho, Massimiliano Allegri, Brendan Rodgers and Mikel Arteta have been linked with the role in recent weeks, while Vieira has spoken of his desire to return to his former club as manager. And, speaking on Hawksbee and Jacobs, Laurens said the Nice boss is ready-made for the job. Park Competes for Grant to Restore Clingmans Dome Tower

first_imgGreat Smoky Mountains National Park announced today that it is participating in Partners in Preservation (PIP), a community-based partnership of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to raise awareness of the importance of preserving historic places, which is embarking on its first national campaign in the program’s 10-year history. In honor of the National Park Service’s Centennial, the 2016 Partners in Preservation: National Parks campaign will award $2 million in grants to historic sites in need of preservation within national parks units, as decided by popular vote.As one of 20 historic places selected, Great Smoky Mountains National Park hopes to be one of the winners of the campaign to help Clingmans Dome Tower. Straddling the North Carolina and Tennessee state line at 6,643 feet, the Clingmans Dome Tower is a prominent landmark and destination as the highest point in the park. Annually, over 600,000 people travel Clingmans Dome Road between April and November to reach the Clingmans Dome Visitor Contact Station and half mile trail to the tower.“Please vote daily to help us win the challenge that will enable us to preserve one of most unique experiences in in the park,” said Superintendent Cassius Cash. “With these funds, we can help ensure that people have the opportunity to walk to the top of the Great Smokies and take in the view from this historic tower.”The structure is a precedent-setting design of the National Park Service’s Mission 66 program, which transformed park planning, management, and architecture and fundamentally altered the visitor experience in national parks. Since 1959, millions of visitors have climbed the tower, where they can see distances of up to 100 miles over the surrounding mountains and valleys. A $250,000 grant would preserve the tower and ensure that visitors continue to experience this unique structure spiraling up from the highest point in the park.“Clingmans Dome is a special treasure for the people of North Carolina and Tennessee,” said Friends of the Smokies President Jim Hart. “Visitors from all over the world flock to this iconic tower and with everyone’s help, we can preserve this magnificent structure for generations to come.”The tower remains structurally strong, but rehabilitation is needed to correct up to four inches of foundation settlement which is causing an uneven force on the structure. By correcting this now, the work can halt further settlement and prevent the need for more extensive structural repair in the future. Preservation maintenance is also needed to address general deterioration conditions along the stone masonry walls, concrete structure, and flagstone terrace. The public is encouraged to vote daily today through July 5 on VoteYourPark.org, the online portal hosted by National Geographic, this year’s media partner, to determine which sites will receive preservation grants. The public is also invited to share their experiences on social media and celebrate these sites using #VoteYourPark.“The support of private organizations has been essential to our efforts to care for the places that convey our nation’s history and culture since the creation of the National Park System 100 years ago,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “The 2016 Partners in Preservation campaign is a strong symbol of our partners’ continued dedication to ensure that these special places are preserved and protected for future generations of Americans.”The public can get involved by visiting savingplaces.org/partners-in-preservation for more information and voting daily through July 5 at VoteYourPark.org. SA firms on Forbes Global 2000

first_img18 April 2006Nineteen South African companies have made it onto this year’s prestigious Forbes Global 2000, which ranks the size of firms listed on the world’s stock exchanges according to their market value, turnover, profit and assets.Companies in the financial services sector top the list, with the Standard Bank and First Rand banking groups ranked, respectively, as the world’s 285th and 361st largest public companies.Next comes synthetic fuels giant Sasol, at 390th place, followed by insurance company Sanlam (454th) and telecommunications parastatal Telkom (589th).Many companies founded and grown in South Africa but now based elsewhere in the world made it even higher on the list. Old Mutual, which moved its head office to London in 1999, came in 185th place. The Anglo American mining group was ranked 116th, and beer company SAB Miller 370th.Mining conglomerate BHP Billiton, which has significant interests in South Africa but is classified as UK/Australian, was ranked 101st.A balanced assessmentThe Forbes list is considered one of the most balanced assessments of the size of listed companies, as it uses four different factors: market value, turnover, profit and assets. This is in contrast to rankings that concentrate on single measures, such as market capitalisation, resulting in misleadingly skewed results. With 19 companies on the list, South Africa is far ahead of the rest of Africa in terms of global business.
